Star Stories

1. Give an example of what teamwork means to you.
a. Describe the situation? During an internship opportunity this summer I was able to work with other volunteers and staff.
b. What was the task at hand? Our goal was to create positive one-on-one interactions for children between the ages of 0-11 in a crisis nursery.
c. What action did you take? I realized that most of the children that acted out the most were in need of the most attention.
d. Finally, what were the results of your action? I was able to help them see that someone loved them and cared about them. This created a positive experience for both the child and for myself.
2. Give me an example of a major challenge that you faced, and how you went about addressing the problem, and how it turned out.
a. Describe the situation? This summer I found myself in a situation where I had custody visitation with my four children, working two jobs, interning, and going to school full-time.
b. What was the task at hand? I had to try and juggle all of these events and determine which took a priority to others when they would overlap.
c. What action did you take? I completed my volunteer hours, spent as much time as I could with my children, but unfortunately let my school work get behind. I learned that I need to better equip myself and ask for help instead of overwhelming myself.
3. Describe a past goal and how you achieved it.
a. Describe the situation. I found myself divorced at the age of 29 with four children and no education.
b. What was the task at hand? I knew I wanted to go to school after the recent loss of a job and realizing I had no way to support my family without an education.
c. What action did you take? After remarrying I talked with my husband about going back to school and filled out the necessary paperwork to start school the next semester at Weber State University.
d. Finally, what were the results of your action? I have been going to school for five semesters straight now and plan to have my associate’s degree by the end of next seme

Internship Group Project

Internships are a very important part of both your education and your career. They give you a great opportunity to explore career choices. For those that want to go to graduate school most will find it much easier to get accepted into a program with an internship referral. There are many employers in the field that ask for experience. Internships also give you chance to network within your field and gain referrals for your resume down the road. These opportunities also help to enhance your schooling experience and connect the academic with the real world. Most medical programs require clinical time as part of the program for this very reason. They want you to have hands on experience when you graduate. Interning can help you to secure a position with the company as well. Many companies will hire the interns they have seen success from over another applicant that they don’t know or haven’t seen their work ethic.
Career exploration: Most college students change their major 3-4 times throughout their schooling. Internships give students the opportunities to explore the field and learn more of what is involved than just the textbook information. The intern may find something they really love or really can’t handle therefore solidifying their choice of career.
Graduate/Continuing Education: Employers like it when an employee has hands-on experience, but how do you gain that experience? It may be difficult to compete for a job without experience in the field. Internships give you a great opportunity to gain experience and to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the field. Employers want to know what you can do for them and the company, but they are equally if not more interested in what you have already done. This gives you the chance to show off your abilities and get great referrals for the future.
Networking: This is a great way to get inside information in the field. If you develop contacts in your career field you will have more opportunities to be ahead or your competition. These contacts can create life-long relationships to help you out throughout your career.
Hands-on experience: By getting into an internship you will be able to apply the knowledge you have acquired in the classroom and also take the experiences in the “real world” back to the classroom. It will open up new discussions in class and reflect a kind of knowledge that can’t be acquired in the classroom. You will also develop a greater appreciation for your education and the accomplishments you make in your academics.
Foot in the door: Internships give you the opportunity to be considered for a position before a candidate not well known by the company. You are able to prove yourself and your work ethics. According to a Career Center’s Career Destination Survey, 25.3% of 2006 Cal Grads reported that they got their current job because they had previously worked for their employer, very likely through an internship. If you succeed and excel, you will have a competitive edge over other applicants.
There are several great reasons to intern during your career exploration or schooling. It can help you to determine if the field you have chosen is right for you and go as far as helping you to receive a permanent job with a company after you complete your schooling. There are many resources available and most anyone would benefit from taking advantage of those resources.

Final Reflection

My academic plan is to continue working as hard as possible to finish a degree and begin work in my career field. I have realized with this class and especially with some personal things that have happened this semester that I do need to give myself a break though sometimes. I have been going to school for five semesters straight without a break and this has taken a toll on my ability to complete all of my work and keep my grades up. I still plan to complete a degree in respiratory therapy, but I realized how many careers there are where I can still help people and work with kids. I am currently looking into getting my teaching certificate and possibly a degree in school counseling.
I was able to do some volunteer work this summer working with at risk or abused children and realized how much I enjoyed this type of work. I learned some very powerful things about myself and my patience levels. I can understand so many things from these children’s viewpoints since I have experienced some of the same situations. I also learned how important empathy is and from the tests that we were required to take to tell us what types of people we are and what type of careers will best fit us I was able to explore more avenues. This was a very important thing to understand and to see just how many career fields there is that could mesh with me and who I am. I really enjoyed the networking and job shadow interview skills that I gained. This was a great way to learn more about the career fields I was interested in and how they would really work with my life and goals. It helped me to have some great influences and resources in my network as I complete my schooling and look into different companies for internships or jobs.
I plan to complete my career goals that I set during activities in this class. Since I am also done with my associates degree I plan to hopefully finish up what classes I need to get my teaching certificate and continue teaching at the school I have been at for the past 8 months. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It has been something I never imagined I would be able to do. I then plan to either get a degree in school counseling to teach and do counseling part time, or just move straight to respiratory therapy. I would like to have something that I know will always be needed, which is something in the medical field. I have such an interest in this as well.
I am excited to see what life and the future will bring. I have learned so much from this class. If I have learned nothing else it is that my career goals do not have to be a solid non-changing plan. There are many things that will fit with my personality type and learning structure. This was a great experience even with all of the overwhelming things I had happen this summer. I appreciate the insights and resources that I gained from this class.

Elevator Speech

Hi, my name is Heather Moody. I am currently a sophomore at UVU. I am the mother to four girls and have a step daughter and son. I am going to be teaching school and am deciding whether to get my teaching certificate and a degree in school counseling or getting my degree in respiratory therapy. I love people and know I want to work with kids and to be able to help them. My strongest skills are my people skills and empathy skills. I am a problem solver and a giver.

This was an introduction I gave when I was meeting some new people talking about career goals. They were very interested and gave me some ideas of ways to maybe get more experience to help me make that decision. They also have become people that will stay in my networking list of people that can possibly help me in the future to gain employment.

Decision Making

I think through the consequences and ensure that I will be ok with the consequences of whatever choice I make. Then I make my decision and follow through with it. Whatever I choose I have to be willing to stand behind that decision and stand up for myself and the reasons I chose what I did.

Job Shadow

Jill Weiser Nursey Coordinator (Houseparents Rita, Neil, and McKall)
Family Support & Treatment Center, Orem, UT

1. What are the services, products, or functions of the organization? Provide prevention and treatment of child abuse through parenting classes, prevention classes at school, therapy, and providing free nursery services to parents who need a break or are in a crisis situation.
2. Who utilized the organization’s services or products? About 50% or a little more of the children who come to the nursery have been abused. Others are in crisis situations, foster care, or domestic issues are going on in the home.
3. What types of positions are available? Most of the one-on-one interactions with the children come from volunteers. There is always a house parent on duty 24 hours a day. Also in the center are secretaries, the nursery coordinator (Jill), social workers, and therapists.
4. What duties and responsibilities are performed( in the area in which you are interested)? In the nursery there the house parent is responsible to oversee all of the volunteers that come in and out of the center each day. They are responsible for all meals and snacks. They also are responsible for any disciple that is needed with the children in the nursery.
5. What are some examples of projects currently under way and problems currently being solved? We are currently holding a parenting class in the center each Wednesday night. Heidi has also been developing a class for the children dealing with anger management. We have had some problems with violent kids in the nursery so we thought this would be a good way to combat that.
6. What is a typical day like? A typical day I get here early in the morning. Go over the list of children that will be coming into the center that day. I watch for bad behaviors, prepare morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner. I enjoy playing with the kids any chance I get, but most of that comes from the volunteers because I’m kept pretty busy.
7. What types of physical localities are involved: outdoors, indoors, travel? We have both indoor and outdoor facilities for our nursery. We are not required to travel as part of the nursery. There are therapist’s that do home visits and conduct parenting classes in their homes.
8. What suggestions do you have for an individual wishing to enter this field of employment? Volunteer and be involved as much as you can. Keep on the lookout for open positions for house parents. That is the best place to get employment unless you get your degree to do social work or therapy.
9. What do you like least about your job and why? I like least having to deal with violent kids and have them feel bad. We have to keep the center a safe place, but you know when they are acting out there is usually a reason and it could be something that is not really their fault. They may not know any better because of the way they have been treated.

I was very impressed with the center and the employees. They really changed my perception of abuse and the effects it has. I did do some volunteer work and it really helped me to understand how much I like working with kids. I am trying to decide if I want to get a degree in school counseling and teaching or still in respiratory therapy and specialize in neo-natal or pediatrics. Either way I would be working with kids who need help, but very different aspects of help. I really enjoyed this assignment. I am glad I got the chance to visit this center and be involved.

Short term
Develop better stress management and time management skills.

Mid-term
Improve my family unity between mine and my husband’s children from different marriages
I will do more family events or vacations when we have the opportunity to have all 6 children in our home at one. Create more opportunities to be equal and showing the children that everyone is treated equally and that there are no double standards. Be sealed in the temple to Justin and set an example for the kids.
Complete my educational goals. Teaching certificate, possibly degree in school counseling.
I will meet with a counselor to talk about options for a teaching certificate and what is needed. I am teaching at ALA again this year and have enjoyed working with the kids. I am interested in possible going into school counseling to help kids deal with the challenges that they face at this stage of life. I am a giving person and feel that I could be of great assistance to some of these kids.
Continue with my teaching career at American Leadership Academy. Network to gain opportunities to move into school counseling and teaching setting. Continue with my goals of becoming a respiratory therapist for a more flexible schedule.
I have been told if I get my teaching certificate that the school will keep me employed. I am interested in possibly going into school counseling after a class I took in social work this summer. I want to network and try to gain some experience to help me determine if it is a good idea to put off the respiratory therapist career for a year to have a back up career as well.

1-What is a typical day like for you? My days are a little crazy. I have several different jobs working in social work. My main full time job is working for Davis Mental Health. I do counseling during the day and also am on call at nights for intakes through the hospital. They call me to assess a patient and determine whether they need to be placed on a psych hold and if there is room in a local hospital for transfer.
2-How did this type of work interest you and how did you get started? I grew up in a home with many family problems. I am a caring person and wanted to help better the lives of others. I wanted to help people get through some of the same issues I had to learn to deal with. I started college right out of high school and just kept going. I worked hard to have my Masters degree in social work by the time I was 24. A career and education were a very important goal in my life.
3-How did you get your job? What jobs and experiences have led you to your present position? I got my job by doing some internship work while in graduate school. My experience in these internships led me to determine what areas of social work I wanted to be involved in.
4-Can you suggest some ways a student could obtain this necessary experience? The best way to honestly get the experience needed is to go internships. It is a very important part of discovering your certain niche of the field as well.
5-What part of this job is most satisfying? I find helping people learn to deal with their problems most satisfying. Linking them to resources available to them makes it easier for them and creates a positive experience for both of us.
6- What part of this job is most challenging? The most challenging part is probably the schedule. Doing on-call intake takes a toll. I am up early mornings, late nights, and sometimes both. It creates interesting work days when I have been up all night doing an intake.
7-What other jobs can you get with the same background? Social work is involved in just about every career field there is. You can practice social work in fields from adoption places, to nursing homes, to treatment facilities, or correctional facilities.
8-Why did you decide to work for this company? There is so much variation in working at a state office. We have a variety of ages that come in looking for help. I did internship work for Davis Mental Health and also worked for some troubled youth homes and this is what influenced me to stay with this company.
9-Do you find your job exciting or boring? My job is extremely exciting. You never run into the same situation twice. Every interaction you have with clients is going to bring something new.
10-Why do customers choose this company? Most customers choose this company because it is well established or because that is where state insurance such as Medicaid sends them. We have great therapists in our office. Each has a niche for a different type of client.

This interview was a great experience. It was a great way to find out more about a career field and ways to get experience in your field. I was interested to hear of all the internship work Chelsea did and how it helped her to decide what area of social work she wanted to be involved in. I prepared for the interview by having all of my questions set up beforehand. I wanted to know about some fields that I thought would be a good fit for me and my abilities. I will definitely use this process in the future to help me be better prepared for finding and getting a job in my field. She made me wish I had been so motivated when I graduated from high school. Chelsea will be a great person to have in my network. She volunteered at so many places and has so much experience. She can also be very motivational in helping get through hard times with school and other issues.

Strengths: One hundred percent of WSU respiratory therapy graduates who seek jobs in the field are employed. Ninety-seven percent pass-rate on the national board exams compared to the national average of seventy-six percent. I see this career as being flexible with my family and time as I will need as my children grow. There are many areas to specialize in and many types of work from hospitals, to doctors offices, to home health care work. I will only need one more year to graduate with my associates degree, but will probably move on to get at least my bachelor’s degree. This career will fit very well with my personality because I love working with people. My youngest daughter had multiple health problems when she was born and I would love to work in the NICU. The environment was awesome and I am very passionate about helping people.
Weaknesses: I really haven’t been able to find anything right now that I think will be a down side to this career. I guess one thing would be working in the medical field and getting attached to patients that you may end up losing. It is always hard to deal with death, but I have dealt with plenty of loss in my life so I would probably be more sympathetic than some people as well. When I ask the counselor at Weber he just stated that it would pay to observe a respiratory therapist.
Opportunities: I believe this would be one of the great strengths to this field. I see job postings frequently for respiratory therapists and usually anything in the medical field. This is one job that cannot be lived without. I will be able to work in the field with my associates degree and then go on to get more schooling and specialize in the field. I do not currently know anyone working in this field, but I do plan to do some job shadowing.
Threats: I do not currently have any threats. I qualify for grants to finance my college education. I have great time management skills and that has helped me to balance home, work, and school. I have been going through a custody battle for my children for the last year and have proved to myself that if I set my mind to things I can do anything I need to.

This was a great activity. I really learned just how many skills I have developed over the years. I am thankful for a boss that took the time to teach me many of them. I am also self-learner which makes it nice because when there is something I want to know or use I can usually figure it out on my owne with a little time and practice.
The skills assessment online was great. The two top career choices were sales engineer, which I did for 8 years, and Respiratory Therapy, my major. It also highlighted fields of education administration, nursing, pediatrics, and school pshychologist. These are all other careers that I have debated about or that will be incorporated into my chosen career.

Top 10 Values Paper

Honesty- to myself, my workplace, and my clients. I believe that honesty is needed in all aspects of life.
Family- My family comes first. I want to work in an environment that understands the importance of this and supports me.
Empathy-Empathy can solve almost any problem. If you have empathy for a person's situation whether good or bad you can probably get through any tough situations.
Integrity- I believe that you should live your life in your career just as you live your life anywhere else. People should know who you are and what you stand for.
Sincerity- This goes alsong with empathy, if you say you are sorry you have to mean it. Don't say I know how you feel if you don't really know how someone feels. That doesn't mean you don't care and aren't hurting for them. You can however show them that you have true sorrow for what they are going through.
Improve others lives-I am a problem solver. I hate to see anyone else in peril. I love to give service and see the smile on the face of someone you do good for.
Self Improvement- I am always looking for ways to improve myself. I am self-motivated and I'm a self-learner.
Ability to change- I feel that to be a good employee you have to learn how to deal with change. There are always changes taking place around us. If we don't learn how to deal with it we will become negative and will be looked over when the boss needs someone to rely on.
Good attitude- Even though maybe not the most qualified may get you further.
Successful- I want to be successful for those I serve, for my family, and for myself. When you feel success it helps everything else listed above. They all play in to each other.
These values may change places of importance over time, but I feel that they will always be values that will be at the top of my list. I hate to see anyone sad or in need of help and not give it. I try to always be positive even when sometimes I really shouldn't have to be because of a certain situation. I feel that is a blessing for me. I can sit back and evaluate the situation before jumping into an emotional outburst. This has helped me through many tough situations in customer service.
